Maggie Butchart is an experienced counsellor / psychotherapist who works online with children (age 13+), young people, and adults with a wide range of issues and problems including: anxiety; depression/low mood; stress; abuse and neglect; assertiveness; anger/aggression; autism spectrum disorder; bereavement/grief; chronic illness; gender and sexual identity; life transitions; relaxation; self-harm; trauma; and many more issues.

She has particular experience working with anxiety; anger management; behavioural issues; self-harming; suicidal ideation; trauma (including rape and sexual abuse); and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
 

Maggie's way of working

Maggie integrates a number of different therapeutic approaches/therapies into her counselling/psychotherapy sessions in order to meet the individual needs and preferences of each client. These include Mindfulness-Based Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Play Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy. Her work is rooted in humanistic and person-centred values. Maggie is also an experienced researcher and she brings her research skills to her counselling work ensuring her practice is grounded in researched evidence. 

When working with adults, Maggie's approach is collaborative. She tailors a holistic therapeutic approach that aims to address each individual's psychological, emotional, and wellbeing needs.

When working with children, Maggie uses the PACE model which offers playfulness, acceptance, curiosity and empathy to help children make sense of their emotional, social and psychological needs. 
 

Maggie's background and training

Maggie has worked as a counsellor/support worker in a number of settings including in several primary schools working with children and young people and for an organisation which supports women who have experienced rape or sexual abuse/exploitation. In addition, Maggie has worked as a researcher evaluating projects for a number of organisations.

Maggie has an MSc in Counseling from the University of Abertay and an MPhil in Research Methods from the University of Dundee. Maggie also has an MSc in International Marketing with Languages from the University of Abertay and an MA (hons) in Spanish and Art History from St Andrews Unversity. 

Maggie is a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
 

Maggie's fee
